Alan started to put his earphones back on again, thinking this is the end of the issue, but he was wrong. Unexpectedly, the middle-aged woman started talking to the old man.
“You live in Chai Chee last time?”
“Yeah”
“What’s your name?”
“Old Nam”
“I am Old Huang’s daughter”
“Old Huang? Oh Old Huang. You are the eldest daughter? The one that was dating Hock?” the old man started talking a little louder as he finally shows some emotion in his voice.
“Yeah, but I am married to another man now. Aren’t you working?”
“No I haven’t been working. I just came out from Woodbridge and I am suffering from cancer. Old Hui also contracted cancer.” The old man was speaking in his flat voice again.
The middle-aged woman took out her wallet yet again, and took out her purse again. Sifting through the notes compartment, she took out a ten dollar bill this time.
“Thank you” the old man said yet again.
Alan could feel the sympathy in him growing. In his mind he starts to wonder where the children of the old man had gone to.
A bus came at this moment. It is not the bus that Alan has been waiting for, but Old Nam and the middle aged woman boarded the bus together. Alan noticed a slight limp in the movement of Old Nam.
As the bus moves out of the bus stop, Alan smiled and silently said a prayer for Old Nam and the middle aged woman, and Old Hui as well, hoping their lives would get better.
Shortly after, another bus came. This time, it was Alan’s turn to get on the bus, starting his long bus ride to school.
Somehow Alan knows, this is not the last of Old Nam he would see.....
